My partner and I recently got engaged—cue shopping for wedding dresses, photographers, and overpriced white cakes.

Another big box to tick is the venue hire. Ranging from renting a box and paying a small fortune to an old church and paying a large fortune, the options around Brisbane are as endless as the costs. The idea of eloping to Bali and getting married barefoot on the beach definitely crossed our minds!

Despite the pull of cocktails on the sand, we narrowed our choices down to two venues. Armed with a list of questions, we visited both in one day, determined to get our names down and move onto the next items on the list.

The first venue was nice—by the river with stunning views across to Bulimba and down towards the city. It was in our budget, the staff were friendly, and the food looked delicious.

However, something was amiss…

Is that a small cockroach lying dead in the corner? And why are the tiles a little sticky?

Needless to say, the floors were quite dirty and needed a good sweep and an even better mop. This is despite an event starting there in less than two hours. They resembled our house after three days of letting the kids run wild with popcorn, crackers, and ice blocks.

The second venue was located next to a golf course. This beautiful old room with leather couches, wooden floorboards, and festoon lighting took things to the next level. The event manager walked us through exactly what would happen on the special day and even what would happen if the weather turned on us. And the floors? They were as spotless as the windows and gardens. All in all, it was a total no-brainer for us.
