I suck at gardening. But I do try. I like the end product and I do enjoy sun-filled days in the garden digging, pruning and planting with my green-thumb partner. I also enjoy the fruits of my labour, whether it be fresh basil, lemons or chillies.

Last weekend, Bec was at work and I was left unattended.

We had a small potted lemon tree and I thought it would be nice to have a bay tree growing nearby. So I popped off to Bunnings to get myself a new shrub or two.

After much digging, planting and mulching my work was done – our luscious lemons, beautiful basil and punchy chillies were now augmented with the subtle flavours of bay leaves. My winter soups will be unreal. She will be so proud of me.

Then she got home…

Issue 1: I didn’t read the label and had chosen a tree that would grow to 15 metres and put it directly next to the house.
Issue 2: You generally only use around 5-10 bay leaves a year.
Issue 3: I had planted 3 of these bad boys, so theoretically now had enough to make soups for the entire northside, for a lifetime.

I should not be left alone for such things…

In honour of upcoming World Environment Day on June 5th, we are launching our eco-friendly print range. From business cards and brochures to corflutes and even t-shirts. All products are made with recyclable materials and will make a real difference to our planet.

And I am leaving tree planting to the experts. In fact, we have teamed up with the wonderful team at B1G1 and for every eco-friendly product sold in June 2024, we will be planting a tree to celebrate and support our wonderful planet.

How to give and receive social reviews

Sharing the love & goodwill between local businesses is a great way to help grow each other’s companies, build solidarity and spread overall good vibes in the local community.

 
Whilst a good old-fashioned ‘thank you’ never goes astray, leaving a review or positive comment on a business’ social media can make a genuine difference to a business in today’s internet-driven market.
 
With almost 85% of all major purchases being reviewed prior to the actual purchase being made, it’s more important than ever to have regular reviews flowing in.
 
 

Lots of positive reviews on a business’ socials will…

  • show they can be trusted
  • help in their search rankings
  • improve their engagement
  • improve their sales & enquiry conversions

 

But how do you get these little nuggets of business gold onto your own pages?

 
Naturally, you need to do a good job and give a great customer experience – but that goes without saying. This alone isn’t enough, sure you might get a few trickle in from time to time but when it comes down to it, you have to ask!|

 

There are lots of ways to get your customers to review you and your products:

  • email them after the sale with direct links to your favourite review sites
  • create a post about them on Instagram or Facebook and make sure to tag them in it
  • use postcards or stickers in your packaging with a request to review
  • use video! This is a great way to stand out – at Brand Hero, we use Bonjoro to get reviews on our socials with great success. It’s easy to use and has direct links to review sites built in.

 

Make sure you engage

If someone leaves a review (positive or negative), make sure to acknowledge it and comment back. A simple “thank you, see you soon!” is enough. Should someone leave a bad review, make sure you use this opportunity as a PR exercise. Respond respectfully and take the discussion offline – there is nothing worse than a public slinging match between two parties!
 
 

It’s not all about receiving…

Whilst receiving positive reviews feels good and is good for business, like all things in life, it’s about give and take. Return the favour and give a few out yourself! This can apply to customers or suppliers.
 
 

Why do this?

  • it makes you feel better that you recognised & contributed to someone’s business success
  • it makes them feel valued and acknowledged for their efforts
  • it helps their business gain more followers through displaying trust
  • it helps their Google ranking (especially with Google reviews)
  • increases the likelihood that they will do business with you again

No, we aren’t rebranding (again), nor are we bringing out our inner “Mean Girls” by wearing pink each Wednesday. Far from it in fact!

Last year we held our first annual Pink Ribbon Morning Tea in support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation and their ongoing research.

This is a topic close to many of our hearts here at BH. Like so many of us these days, several staff members have been personally touched by this disease and we felt it was a brilliant way to support the cause.

The event was held on the 25th of October and was, by all accounts, a wonderful success. We managed to raise $725 and were able to connect with our customers and members of our community who too, have been affected by breast cancer. It was incredibly rewarding with the event exceeding our expectations on every level. Our office was left imbued with the most beautiful, compassionate energy.

 

The shirts we had made for the event were pink. The shade is vibrant, energetic and full of life. It seemed fitting that we keep this passion alive as a gentle reminder of those we have loved and lost and those that continue the fight.

This week brings to a close National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The mission: ZERO DEATHS FROM BREAST CANCER BY 2030.
